Frequently Asked Questions

I don’t have any experience in Martial Arts. Can I come to your classes too? Of course, you can come to our classes. We have everything from beginners to pro’s in almost any given class. Our instructors will accomodate any skill level and the more advanced people will always lend a helping hand too. Remember, everyone has to start somewhere, and even the really advanced people in class were just like yourself a few years ago.

I don’t want to be a professional fighter. Is Southwest MMA for me? Southwest MMA offers classes for all skill levels and most of the people that train on a regular basis are just like yourself in the sense that they want to train for fun, fitness, self defense or a number of reasons that don’t include becoming a professional MMA fighter. However, if someone aspires to reach the amateur or professional ranks in MMA we have the capabilities to help you reach those goals.

Well, I’m not in great shape. Should I get in shape before I start training at Southwest MMA? The sooner you jump in to class and get started with the technical training the easier classes will be and the better shape you will be in. Grappling and striking gives a different kind of cardio and I’ve seen Triathaletes and marathon runners come in and be dead tired in less than 30 minutes. Now get suited up and get in to class!

What type of gear do I need to try a class? All you need is a pair of shorts and T shirt. If you have a mouth piece, athletic groin protector or hand wraps, by all means bring them, but if not we have any gear you will need to try us out for a week. You will eventually need to purchase your own gear if you do decide to join our family at Southwest MMA, but it won’t be needed immediately.

What’s the difference between Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are very similar and Jiu Jitsu even originated from Judo. However, Judo is an Olympic sport that focuses primarily on throws, trips and takedowns though it does have some ground grappling. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling art that does start standing, but focuses more on ground grappling where the primary goal is to obtain dominant position on your opponent and submit them using moves such as chokes, arm locks, foot locks and other joint manipulation.

I would like to get my children involved in Martial Arts. Is Southwest MMA right for them? At Southwest MMA we have one of the best childrens Judo programs in the whole state of Arizona. 2 time Olympic alternate and multiple world team member, Dave Faulkner, heads our childrens Judo program and has developed the team to many tournament titles. Starting April 2010 Southwest MMA will also be offering childrens Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to complement it’s great program. Please call for details.
